Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) and the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) have announced that Nina Intharakunha has been recognized as a part of the 2024 ALL IN Student Voting Honor Roll. This award is given to college students who have done outstanding work to promote nonpartisan democratic engagement at their respective campuses. Along with 137 other students, Nina has been recognized for their voter registration, education, and turnout efforts during the 2023 elections, which included important ballot measures and local/state races.
“Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is honored to celebrate 137 student leaders who model nonpartisan democratic engagement,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. “These honorees hosted candidate information sessions, created guides on polling location accessibility, registered their peers to vote and so much more. We know these students will continue to make a difference in our democracy.”
According to All IN, research suggests that participating in democratic activities, such as voting, is a behavior that requires consistent practice to become a habit. According to a recent survey conducted by CIRCLE, 86% of young people under the age of 35 who voted in 2022 and 72% of those who voted in 2020 are highly likely to vote again in 2024. Colleges and universities play a crucial role in promoting the development of active and engaged citizens who are committed to participating in democratic processes, both at the ballot box and in other aspects of civic life.
The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge works to be a catalyst for colleges and universities, empowering them to excel in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. With the guidance of the ALL IN staff, participating campuses complete a series of action items to embed nonpartisan civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation into their institutional framework. The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge is a nationwide initiative, engaging over 1,000 institutions with a collective student enrollment of over 10 million in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Institutions interested in joining the challenge can do so here.
