About our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics respond to emergency calls, performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities. Employment opportunities are available with municipal and private ambulances, fire departments, hospitals, clinics and industrial settings. EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER (EMR) COURSE

This course is designed to give students the entry-level knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency medical responder care for patients who access the emergency medical system. Upon successful course completion, students are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification examination. EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT) TRAINING

The EMT course prepares the student to enter the realm of EMS. The EMT course is a necessity for those who wish to work on an ambulance, but also benefits firefighters, police officers, industrial safety personnel and other healthcare professions. This course provides the student with the knowledge to provide basic life support (BLS) to patients in cardiac arrest, experiencing medical emergencies and those with traumatic injuries.
Details: 1 semester, 7 credits (150 hours).

Required: EMST 125 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT Basic) Course Information Session:
The Emergency Medical Technician course information session is required in order to register for the EMST 125 course offered at Southern Maine Community College. During this session you will get a detailed overview of the course schedule and expectations, have time to ask questions, and to ensure the course is the right fit for you.

ADVANCED MEDICAL EMERGENCY TECHNICIAN (AEMT) SHORT-TERM TRAINING

Learn basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients accessing the emergency medical system. Students must possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation.

PARAMEDICINE/EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE DEGREE

Learn the skills necessary to become a member of the healthcare team that provides advanced-level care using standing orders, clinical judgment and medical direction of a physician. In the out-of-hospital environment, the paramedic leads the healthcare team. Employment opportunities are available with municipal and private ambulances, fire departments, hospitals, clinics and industrial settings.
