Four-year colleges schedule visits to SMCC

Interested in transferring after graduation? Admissions reps from colleges and universities in Maine and elsewhere in New England will be a common sight at SMCC in the coming months.

Throughout the Fall Semester, representatives from four-year institutions will visit to answer questions and provide information about their schools. Each year, many SMCC graduates transfer to private and public institutions across Maine, New England and the country.

“This is great opportunity for student to learn about academic programs, financial aid, student life and transfer agreements at other schools,” said Associate Dean Margie Fahey. “More and more colleges are interested in our students. Our graduates have a strong track record of achieving success at schools they transfer to.”

Here’s a schedule of visits to the South Portland Campus Center by college admissions representatives in the coming months. The list is updated frequently so check the My Transfer calendar on My Maine Guide on the SMCC portal for the latest on which colleges are visiting when.

Clubs broaden student opportunities

Whether you’re interested in astronomy, business, writing, community service, social justice or costume design, there’s a good chance that SMCC has a student organization for you.

Getting involved in organizations helps students build connections, develop lifelong friends and mentors, and grow personally. Students who are engaged in campus life are also more likely to succeed academically.

Several clubs took part in the Sept. 5 Student Involvement Fair in the South Portland Campus Center to spread the word and talk to students about what they have to offer and recruit new members.

In her words, business student Lydia McMullan says being involved in student organizations is about “community.” She is currently a member of the Cosplay costume design club and used to be a member of the Gaming Club. At the Student Involvement Fair, she signed up for the Business Club and Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Clubs allow students to make new friends outside of the classroom, pursue their interests and even travel, like the time Cosplay members traveled to Boston, she said.

“It makes school more fun,” she said. “It allows you to build connections and opens up opportunities.”

Tyler O’Brien, president of the Astronomy Club, said students who join the club will learn about the universe, take part in research and get involved in other astronomy-related projects around SMCC. One project he is pursuing is to make a scale solar system around the South Portland Campus with the Campus Center serving as the sun and installing some kind of markers around campus to represent the planets.

“The focus, though, is star parties, getting groups of people together outside at night with a telescope and point it up,” he said.

For more information on how to join or start a student organization, students can email studentactivities@smccME.edu or stop by the Student Activities Office in the lobby of Spring Point Residence Hall.
