Student Spotlight: Meet Emma Bourne

Emma Bourne came to SMCC in hopes of exploring her academic interests at an affordable price before transferring to a four-year institution to continue her education. She hasn’t been disappointed.

After graduating high school in Vermont, Emma took off a year to work and travel. She then came to SMCC in 2019, attracted by the location, the low tuition, the wide variety of programs and the good things she’d heard about the school.

She checked out a couple of different programs before deciding on Business Administration, where she has excelled while discovering her passion for accounting. Through one of her business classes, she developed a social media marketing campaign for a small farm outside of Portland that she is working with.

Outside of the classroom, she serves as the Student Senate treasurer and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the Business Club. She’s also taken up surfing and has stepped up her running, with plans to enter her first marathon this year.

Following graduation in May, Emma plans to transfer to a four-year school to earn an accounting degree. She has her sights on schools in and around Boston and in North Carolina.

“When I first looked at colleges, it was like how can I explore a variety of courses and check off my prerequisites and do it affordably. At SMCC, I’ve gotten a real high-quality education that’s given me the opportunity to explore my interests both inside and outside of the classroom.”
