Andy Serfes is not only the first generation of his family to attend college, he was the first to even complete high school.
Now on track to earn his associate degree in the spring, he plans to continue his education after SMCC with the aim of eventually becoming a lawyer.
Andy grew up poor, raised by his grandmother and moving 10 times and attending three high schools before graduating high school in 2020. Despite a challenging upbringing, he has always enjoyed school and been passionate about learning.
School, he says, has always kept him “occupied and happy.” Now, SMCC is providing the education he needs to go after his dreams.
“I wanted to pursue higher education. SMCC offered that,” he said. “But they offered it at a price that can’t be beat. And I’m so thankful for that. Thank you SMCC.” Andy is earning a Liberal Studies degree with a focus in Art. This fall, he will serve as a resident assistant in Orion Residence Hall on the Midcoast Campus in Brunswick. Since arriving at SMCC, he has received support from the TRIO Student Support Services program, while also being active with the Rainbow League student organization, the Dungeons and Dragons club and in student activities.
Following SMCC, Andy plans to earn a bachelor’s degree and then go to law school. He also hopes to continue creating his acrylic paintings and other artwork. For now, he’s enjoying all that he’s getting out of SMCC.
“I don’t know where my passion for learning comes from. I think I was born it.”
