Four Southern Maine Community College biotechnology students participated in this month’s MDI Biological Laboratory student symposium, which brings student researchers together to present their scientific research through interactive presentations and posters.
The SMCC students conducted research during summer fellowships at the MDI Biological Laboratory, the University of New England, Bowdoin College and the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. They and students from other colleges and universities presented their findings Aug. 7 at a daylong symposium at the biomedical research institution in Bar Harbor.
SMCC students who attended were (shown left to right in photo) Christopher Keister, Romeo Kimpwene, Nelea Mihaila and Jessica Mayhew.
Jessica Mayhew was a summer intern at the MDI Biological Laboratory and studied eelgrass populations in Frenchman Bay.
Romeo Kimpwene was a summer intern at the University of New England, where he researched the stress response system known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenala axis.
Nelea Mihaila was a summer intern at Bowdoin College, researching a fungus called Candida albicans.
Christopher Keister was a summer intern at Maine Medical Center Research Institute.
