Law enforcement training exercise and parking lot closures on South Portland Campus

The Maine Army National Guard’s Civil Support Team (CST), supported by the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), will conduct a full-scale training exercise, Katahdin Shield 2024, from June 3 to 6, 2024. This exercise involves over 30 agencies and aims to assess and enhance response efforts to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive hazards.

SMCC will be one of the host sites for this training exercise. We want to share some vital information with you about this exercise:

  • The exercise will involve simulated scenarios and is not indicative of a real-life emergency.
  • Significant law enforcement activity will occur in and around Casco Bay, SMCC and Fort Williams.
  • Expect exercises throughout the day on the SMCC South Portland Campus.
  • Please refrain from interfering with the operations to ensure the exercise proceeds as planned.
  • During this period, increased activity on campus will include fire trucks, ambulances, helicopters and other state safety vehicles. Some vehicles may respond with flashing lights and sirens as part of the exercise.
  • Please pay attention to and follow instructions on any signs during the event.

SMCC Parking lot closures: B, BB, DD and II will be closed on June 5 and 6. We have included a map with the lots highlighted. We encourage anyone coming to campus these days to arrive early to secure available parking.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this exercise. To learn more, visit maine.gov/mema/KatahdinShield.
