SMCC welcomes international, multicultural students
International and multicultural students were welcomed to SMCC at a reception hosted by the Student Life Department.

At a Sept. 16 gathering in the Ortiz Atrium, students had a chance to meet one another, enjoy refreshments and hear from SMCC President Ron Cantor welcoming them to the SMCC community.

SMCC has a couple of dozen international students this year from Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Congo, Ethiopia, Finland, Germany, Haiti, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Panama, Russia, Singapore, Togo, Ukraine and Zambia. Countless other students have parents who are native to foreign countries.

Louie Ngyen arrived at SMCC this fall and is enrolled in the Communications & New Media department. Louie, whose parents are from Vietnam, wants to be a filmmaker.

“This is my first year in college and I already feel a sense of belonging,” he said at the reception. “The teachers are great and my adviser is great.”

Originally from Afghanistan, Zakia Momand is in her second year at SMCC, studying medical assisting. She says it’s been helpful having so many other international students at SMCC.

“It helps because we’ve been in similar situations and we help each other out,” she said.

Another reception for international students is planned for Oct. 23.

Transfer2-optimized_smCollege visit season underway
Interested in transferring after graduation? Baccalaureate colleges and universities have begun visiting campus, and SMCC’s annual Transfer Fair isn’t far away.

Throughout the Fall Semester, representatives from four-year institutions in Maine and beyond will visit the South Portland Campus to answer questions and provide information about their schools. SMCC graduates each year transfer to private and public institutions across Maine, New England and nationwide.

You can browse information and meet admission representatives from more than 30 schools from across the Northeast at the Transfer Fair, held from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Campus Center.

SMCC has transfer agreements with dozens of universities and colleges in Maine and across New England that can make the transfer process seamless. For a list of transfer agreements, click on the “View transfer partner agreements with four-year colleges” link on My Career & Transfer on the MySMCC student portal.
