Students meet legislators, advocate for SMCC

SMCC students made the most of a rare opportunity to meet face-to-face with Maine legislators and tell them how much SMCC means to them.

A group of six lawmakers visited SMCC on Jan. 30 to meet with President Cantor, staff and students, while enjoying a light breakfast in a memorable setting: the Precision Machining & Manufacturing lab.

President Cantor provided legislators with an update about SMCC, and students spoke about SMCC’s academics, affordability, diversity, sense of community and how the College is helping them achieve their career goals.

Legislators, for their part, said they’re impressed by SMCC’s offerings at an affordable price.

“I tell everybody it’s the best-kept secret,” said Rep. Karen Vachon.

Other legislators who attended were Rep. Kevin Battle, Rep. Dick Farnswoth, Sen. Rebecca Millett, Rep. Terry Morrison, Rep. Linda Sanborn and Rep. Peter Stuckey.

Students who joined in were Justin Cochran, Whitney Cole, Illaria Dana, Christine Dubay, Chase Hewitt, Bronson Kieltyka, Wayne Lawson, Chris Mills, Adrienne Pelletier, Brianna Silva and Erik Squire. Alumnus Garrick Hoffman, who graduated in the fall, also attended and spoke about his positive experiences while at SMCC.

Mills, who is enrolled in the Precision Machining & Manufacturing program, also provided legislators a hands-on demonstration on one of the lab’s state-of-the-art machining tools.

HelpDesk extends hours

The SMCC HelpDesk has extended its hours to help students succeed.

The HelpDesk is the central point of contact for any technology-related questions and issues, including student email and the MySMCC student portal. If you have problems with your password, in a classroom, or accessing the portal or online-learning systems, the HelpDesk can be contacted by calling 741-5696 or HelpDesk@smccME.edu.

In an effort to help students succeed, the HelpDesk has extended its hours Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The HelpDesk is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays.

The Information Technology Department also provides other valuable services, including a full offering of computer labs on both the South Portland and Midcoast campuses

The department’s Open Lab, with more than 30 computers in Room 103 in the Ross Technology Building, is available every day for student use. The hours are Monday through Friday from when the building is open until 9 p.m., and weekend days from noon to 5 p.m. The department also oversees labs in the Learning Commons, the library, the Campus Center lounge and in room 137 in Orion Hall on the Midcoast Campus.
