Andrea Atkinson has been named SMCC’s Student of the Year for her academic success and leadership as president of the SMCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
Atkinson, who is working toward a degree in Liberal Studies-Focus in Art, serves as president of Alpha Chi Nu, SMCC’s chapter of PTK. She is also a director on the Student Senate.
She was formally recognized during a Maine Community College System Zoom ceremony on April 28 that paid tribute to Students of the Year at all of Maine’s community colleges.
The students were selected by faculty and staff at their college for their academic success and their campus and community involvement. In addition to being named Student of the Year, each student received a John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000. The Lapoints served as trustees of the Maine Community College System, and Jana helped establish the fund for the annual awards after John’s death in 1995.
“I am incredibly honored to accept SMCC’s 2021 Student of the Year and John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award,” Atkinson said. “Thank you so much SMCC, MCCS and Jana! And thank you to everyone who has encouraged and supported me stepping into my potential.”
