Interpreting Courses

The Community and Medical Interpreter Training Program prepares bilingual individuals to be neutral third-party professionals who can effectively facilitate communication between two or more parties who do not share a common language. This program supports national medical interpreting standards of practice.

Courses:

Community Interpreting

This course introduces bilingual individuals and beginning interpreters to the roles of the interpreter, interpreter’s code of ethics, modes of interpreting, and the fundamentals of interpreting in clinical, educational and social service settings. It fulfills the prerequisite for Introduction to Medical Interpreting. To receive a certificate of satisfactory completion and pass the course, student must attend all sessions and earn a score of 80% or higher on the final assessment given on the last day of class. 

Upon successful completion of this program, trainees have gone on to work in education, public and social services, public housing and transportation, job training, immigrant welcome centers, events, and more.

Time: 22 Hours
Cost: $425
Location: On-Campus, Online and Hybrid options
Prerequisites:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Language proficiency in English and at least one other language
  • SMCC accepts ACTFL OPi and OPIc evaluations of Advanced Mid or higher
  • SMCC accepts TOEFL iBT evaluation scores of 90 or higher
Introduction to Medical Interpreting

This course provides an overview of the US healthcare system, medical terminology, body organization and systems, and illnesses and treatment. To receive a certificate of satisfactory completion and pass the course, students must have 80% attendance and earn a score of 80% or higher on the final assessment given on the last day of class. 

Upon successful completion of this program, trainees have gone on to work in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, medical and dental offices, insurance companies, optometry and ophthalmology practices, assisted living and long-term care facilities, and more.

Time: 40 Hours
Cost: $825
Location: On-Campus, Online and Hybrid options
Prerequisites:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Language proficiency in English and at least one other language
  • SMCC accepts ACTFL OPi and OPIc evaluations of Advanced Mid or higher
  • SMCC acceptsTOEFL iBT evaluation scores of 90+
  • One of the following:
    • SMCC’s 12-hour Basic Skills of Interpreting
    • SMCC’s 20-hour Community Interpreting course
    • Certificates from other agencies will be evaluated for acceptance.
