Award Recipients

Given to an SMCC alumnus who has excelled in their profession and made meaningful contributions to their community and the College.

Leah Mitchell has been a Paramedic for 20 years and is a recognized leader in Maine’s Emergency Medical Services profession. She has served at agencies across the state, been a long-standing member of the state EMS education committee, and directed programs at two MCCS training centers. In her current role, she oversees education, training, and quality improvement for Maine’s largest EMS agency, impacting nearly 300 providers and patients across Maine and into New Hampshire. Leah also advocates for EMS education within the MaineHealth system, ensuring access to clinical opportunities for SMCC students. A standout graduate of the College’s EMS program, she exemplifies the dedication to service that SMCC strives to promote.

Given to an SMCC faculty member who exceeds expectations while promoting the College’s mission to both the internal and external community.

Kevin Sweeney is SMCC’s longest-tenured faculty member, beginning his career in 1983 when the College was Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. Then offering just three English courses, the department now has well over 100 sections spanning composition, oral communication, literature, theater, poetry, and more—many of which Kevin still teaches. A steadfast supporter of the College, he has long fostered strong relationships across campus and was a respected union rep throughout the Maine Community College System. Known as the guardian of Poetry Month, a champion of local writers, and the former owner of Rudy, the beloved campus cat, Kevin is above all an enthusiastic teacher. He engages students with patience and respect, guiding those pursuing further education or new careers. He loves our students—and they love him right back.

Given to an SMCC staff member who exceeds expectations while promoting the College’s mission to both the internal and external community. This year, we have co-winners.

Since joining SMCC in 2016, AJ has been an integral part of the College community. He advises students within the Business and Hospitality pathway while also supporting student-athletes to ensure they receive the help and information they need. Known for stepping up in challenging times, AJ makes sure that all students—not just those on his roster—are taken care of. His commitment to student success and the many roles he plays make him a vital member of the SMCC family.

Kalena has gone above and beyond to support students through one of the most challenging times in SMCC’s history. Originally brought in as a Free College pathway advisor, she continued to devote countless hours to helping students navigate registration and program processes, even while facing job uncertainty. Known for her positive energy, Kalena brings laughter and encouragement into the office and remains a source of support for both students and colleagues. Her dedication exemplifies the student-first mission of SMCC.

Given to a business or organization that has made a significant impact through its support of SMCC and the broader business community.

Under Jane Humphrey’s leadership, the Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza has become a highly successful fundraising event supporting MCCS campuses, with SMCC as the largest beneficiary. Jane also established an endowed scholarship at SMCC in memory of Lindsey Withers, ensuring lasting impact for future students. A champion for SMCC, her dedication and advocacy have strengthened opportunities for students and highlighted the importance of community support for higher education.

Althea’s journey to and through SMCC is a powerful story of resilience, determination, and hard work. Before graduating, she earned a full-time role with Facilities, where she continues to bring the same grit, positivity, and dedication that defined her student years. Althea is a student, an alumna, and now a valued employee—her success reflects both her own resolve and the support of the Facilities team that encouraged her every step of the way.
