As a public college, SMCC welcomes community members to enjoy our beautiful campus year-round. With winter weather now upon us, we want to remind everyone—students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike—to take extra care while walking around campus. Slips and falls can happen quickly on icy or snow-covered surfaces and may result in injuries that disrupt work, school, and everyday life.
To help keep yourself safe during the winter months, please keep these simple tips in mind when you’re on campus:
- Remember to walk like a penguin
- Focus on the task of walking
- Look ahead of you as you walk – scan your path for slip hazards
- Walk slowly through any spot on the pavement that looks wet or icy
- If you can, avoid walking on pavement that looks icy or wet. Walk around the spot
- Wear shoes with good traction – bring a change of shoes if you don’t want to wear boots all day
- Stay off your phone until inside – distracted walking is dangerous even without ice
Students, faculty, and staff can visit MySMCC for additional winter safety information and resources.
Thank you for visiting and enjoying our beautiful coastal campus all year long. We appreciate everyone doing their part to stay safe this winter.
