SMCC students, employees recognized for leadership

SMCC students and employees who support them received well-earned recognition on Friday for their leadership and accomplishments during the academic year.

Student Life recognized students, student organizations, faculty and staff virtually in its pre-recorded Leadership Awards Ceremony. An in-person ceremony is usually held late each spring, but it was held online this year due to the pandemic.

“SMCC is full of special people, both students and employees, who make this a special community,” SMCC President Joe Cassidy said in opening remarks. “Today’s award winners are the very best of the best. Thank you for all you do for the college and one another. I’m very proud to be associated with each of you.”

This year’s winners are:

  • Leader of the Pack, given to a second-year or more student leader: Zachariah Bower
  • Rising Star, given to a first-year student leader: Andrea Atkinson
  • Event of the Year: “Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Right to Vote,” hosted by the Student Senate
  • Outstanding Student Organization: Student Senate
  • Exemplary Student Employee: Sarah Metcalf
  • Distinguished Service Award: Christina LeBel
  • Distinguished Club Advisor: Tori Penney
  • Going the Extra Mile Staff Award: Jeff Kelley, of Facilities Management
  • Going the Extra Mile Faculty Award: Laura Dorsey, biology instructor
