Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) is committed to maintaining a learning, living, and working environment free from sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, relationship violence, stalking, and retaliation. SMCC encourages all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to report concerns so that supportive measures, assistance, and appropriate resolution processes can be offered.

What Is a Title IX Concern?

Title IX concerns may include, but are not limited to:

  • Sexual harassment
  • Sexual assault
  • Dating violence
  • Domestic violence
  • Relationship violence
  • Stalking
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Retaliation for reporting or participating in an investigation
  • Other sex-based conduct that interferes with a person’s ability to participate in an educational program or employment opportunity

How to Report a Concern

Any student, employee, or visitor who experiences, witnesses, or becomes aware of potential sex discrimination or sex-based misconduct is encouraged to make a report.

Reports can be submitted whether or not you choose to pursue a formal complaint or participate in a disciplinary process.

What Happens After a Report?

When a report is received, the Title IX Coordinator will:

  • Reach out to the individual who may have experienced the conduct
  • Explain available supportive measures
  • Provide information about reporting options
  • Explain the difference between a report and a formal complaint
  • Discuss available campus and community resources
  • Explain options for pursuing a college process, a criminal process, or both

You are not required to file a formal complaint to receive support and resources.

Supportive Measures

SMCC can provide supportive measures regardless of whether a formal complaint is filed. Depending on the situation, these may include:

  • Academic adjustments
  • Changes in class schedules
  • Housing modifications
  • Work schedule adjustments
  • Campus escort services
  • Mutual no-contact directives
  • Counseling referrals
  • Extensions of deadlines
  • Excused absences
  • Other measures designed to preserve access to educational programs and employment opportunities

The CRA provides confidential support, information, advocacy, and referrals. Speaking with the CRA does not automatically initiate a college investigation or disciplinary process.

Privacy and Confidentiality

SMCC will make every effort to respect the privacy of all individuals involved. Information shared with the Title IX Coordinator is handled in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, and disclosures are limited to those with a legitimate need to know in order to respond to reports and provide support.

Retaliation Is Prohibited

SMCC strictly prohibits retaliation against anyone who:

  • Reports a Title IX concern
  • Participates in an investigation
  • Serves as a witness
  • Requests supportive measures
  • Assists another person in making a report

Retaliation may result in disciplinary action.
