SMCC launches new manufacturing training class in partnership with Paradigm Windows

Southern Maine Community College is launching a new workforce training class to provide Paradigm Windows the skilled workers it needs to grow while improving career opportunities for Maine residents.

The Manufacturing Technician course offers training in skills that include workplace safety, technical math, hand tool operation, measurement, assembly and lean manufacturing systems. The course is grant-funded at no cost to qualified applicants, with classes beginning August 6 and running through September 5. Paradigm Windows will give job interviews to people who successfully complete the program.

“SMCC has expanded its workforce training programs with companies of all sizes across southern and midcoast Maine,” said Jim Whitten, SMCC’s Dean of Workforce Development. “With a low unemployment rate of about 3 percent, Maine businesses are in need of qualified employees and this training is vital to helping bridge that gap for our business partners.”

Paradigm manufactures and distributes custom vinyl windows and sliding doors. It is based in Portland and has 225 employees. People interested in the program can find more information at https://www.smccme.edu/paradigmmanufacturingtraining.

“This training course offered by SMCC is invaluable to both Paradigm and to new employees who are being introduced into the manufacturing workforce,” said Jennifer Morin, Paradigm’s Director of Human Resources. “This training enables Paradigm to increase the efficiency of the on-boarding process, while giving new employees the skills and tools necessary to transition and acclimate into their daily duties with a higher confidence level.”

SMCC’s Workforce Development Department has developed and offers numerous training programs in fields ranging from welding, information technology and culinary to construction and hospitality.

Funding for the program is provided through the Maine Quality Centers, which is part of the Maine Community College System and provides customized workforce training grants to Maine employers with training delivered through SMCC and Maine’s other community colleges.
