SeaWolves capture two USCAA Golf national championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) golf program made history this week at the Penn State Blue Course, capturing two national championships at the 2025 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Golf National Championships.p2

For the first time in program history, the SMCC men’s golf team claimed the USCAA National Championship team title, while first-year standout Grace Thompson earned Individual National Champion honors in the women’s field—marking one of the most successful days in SMCC Athletics history.

Competing over two days, Oct. 13–14, the Seawolves posted a team score of 34-over-par to finish nine strokes ahead of runner-up The Apprentice School and outpace a 16-team national field.

Freshman Will Farschon led the way for SMCC, finishing second individually at 1-over-par, just two strokes behind medalist D. Yinger of Penn State–York. His performance capped a breakout season that already included Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Golfer of the Year, All-Conference, and All-Tournament honors.

Farschon was joined by teammates Chris Keene (+11), Dani Aguado (+12), Drew Goulet (+13), and Matthew Quigley (+15), whose steady play secured SMCC’s first national title. Goulet’s consistent performance this fall also earned him YSCC All-Conference and All-Tournament recognition.

“This group believed in themselves and put in the work every week,” said Head Coach Scott Nevers. “They’ve had the talent all along—the key was buying into the mindset that they could compete with anyone. They took that belief and turned it into a championship.”

Nevers and Assistant Coach Seth Semmelrock were named the USCAA Golf Coaching Staff of the Year, capping an already decorated season. Earlier this month, Nevers earned his second consecutive YSCC Coach of the Year award after leading SMCC to victories in eight regular-season tournaments, the YSCC Championship on October 5, and now the USCAA National Championship.P1

In addition to the men’s team title, Grace Thompson captured the USCAA Women’s National Invitational Championship, becoming the College’s second individual national champion and highlighting the continued growth of SMCC’s golf program.

“This is a tremendous moment for SMCC Athletics and for our entire College community,” said Ethan Wells, Interim Director of Athletics. “Winning both a team and individual national championship in the same week speaks to the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff. They’ve set a new standard for what’s possible at SMCC.”

President Kristen Miller praised the program’s success as a reflection of the College’s mission and spirit. “These championships are about more than golf—they represent teamwork, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence that defines our students,” Miller said. “We couldn’t be prouder of Coach Nevers, his team, and Grace Thompson for making history and showing the nation what it means to be a SMCC SeaWolf.”

The victories mark the first-ever national team title for SMCC Golf, the second individual golf championship, and the College’s fifth overall USCAA National Championship, joining softball’s title earlier this spring, men’s basketball in 2022, and golfer Tommy Stirling’s individual championship more than a decade ago.

With both a team and individual national title, the Seawolves close their 2025 season as dual national champions.
