November is Advising Month at Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), and students are encouraged to take advantage of a variety of opportunities to connect with academic advisors, plan their upcoming courses and prepare for winter, spring and summer registration.
Throughout the month, SMCC’s Advising team will offer registration labs, extended drop-in hours and informal advising sessions at locations across the South Portland and Midcoast campuses. Several activities will also take place in residence halls, making it easier for students to get answers to their questions and connect with the support they need.
Whether you’re selecting courses for next semester, reviewing your academic progress or simply unsure who your advisor is, Advising Month is an opportunity to get connected and make a plan.
Plan ahead: Winter, spring and summer registration
With registration opening for upcoming terms, November is the perfect time to meet with your academic advisor and plan your next steps. Whether you’re looking to take a course over winter break, build your spring schedule or get ahead with summer classes, SMCC offers opportunities to keep moving toward your academic goals.
Winter courses are scheduled from late December through mid-January, offering students an opportunity to earn credits during the break between semesters. Students can also begin planning their spring and summer schedules now.
Spring and Summer 2027 registration dates
- Monday, Oct. 26, at 8 a.m. | Registration opens for current degree-seeking students with more than 30 credits and veteran students.
- Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 8 a.m. | Registration opens for current degree-seeking students with fewer than 30 credits.
- Monday, Nov. 2, at 8 a.m. | Registration opens for new students and dual enrollment students.
- Tuesday, Dec. 1 | Open registration begins for non-degree students.
Students are encouraged to connect with their academic advisors to explore available winter, spring and summer courses, review program requirements and create a schedule that supports their academic goals.
Why meet with your advisor?
Academic advisors can help students select courses that align with their academic goals, understand program requirements and make progress toward graduation or transfer.
Meeting with an advisor can also help students prepare for registration, explore their academic options and address questions before the next semester begins.
Throughout November, students can take advantage of scheduled registration labs, pathway-specific advising hours and Quick Advising sessions. Many opportunities are available on a drop-in basis, with no appointment necessary.
