SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Southern Maine Community College is holding an on-the-spot acceptance day to assist a growing number of students seeking to attend SMCC this fall. Prospective students will be able meet one-on-one with college representatives and complete the entire admissions process in a single visit.
SMCC’s Admissions Office will be open for expanded hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, to meet with prospective students individually and provide a simple solution for people to apply, take academic placement tests (from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.), fill out financial aid forms, sign up for orientation and have questions answered. People who are interested should bring a copy of their high school diploma or transcript and, if transferring to SMCC, official college transcripts in a sealed envelope. Students who register during the day will be eligible for a drawing awarding tuition costs of one class in the Fall Semester.
People can also stop by the office anytime during regular business hours, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
New student registrations at SMCC for the Fall Semester are up 2.5 percent over last year. A college education is more valuable now than ever and affordability and transferability are key, said SMCC President Ron Cantor.
“We want to help as many students as possible get a smart start with a great college education at low tuition and fees, and help them finish strong with a successful career or the baccalaureate degree of their choice,” he said. “The U.S. Department of Education says by 2020, an estimated two-thirds of all job openings will require postsecondary education or training.”
