SMCC names Dr. Paul Charpentier as Vice President, Academic Dean

Southern Maine Community College has named Dr. Paul Charpentier as its Vice President and Academic Dean following a nationwide search.

Dr. Charpentier has worked at SMCC for 24 years as a faculty member and administrator, and has served as interim Academic Dean for nearly two years. As Academic Dean, he is the College’s chief academic officer, responsible for educational policy and academic programs.

Dr. Charpentier has a doctorate in post-secondary teaching and education from the University of Maine, a master’s degree in education leadership from the University of Southern Maine, and a bachelor’s degree in applied technical education from USM. He also has an associate degree from the Culinary Institute of America.

In announcing the appointment, SMCC President Joe Cassidy said Dr. Charpentier has a deep institutional knowledge of SMCC and an “unwavering fidelity” to the College.

“In addition to his experience and knowledge of the college and Maine Community College System, Paul brings to bear an awareness of national trends and innovations,” Cassidy said. “That awareness, when coupled with his understanding of the College, will allow him to move SMCC forward in many areas.”

Charpentier said he looks forward to building upon SMCC’s strong academic foundation.

“I am excited about continuing our mission of transforming lives through education and training,” he said. “We are committed to meeting the changing needs of Maine residents and employers.”
