Illaria Dana,

Following graduation in May, Illaria Dana has her sights set on schools in Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Washington.

Illaria has made the most of her time at SMCC since arriving in 2014. She’s an honor roll student and managing editor of The Beacon while serving as vice president of the Student Senate and on the officer team of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

After SMCC, she plans to continue her education and study sociology and creative writing. She’s been accepted to Smith College, but is still awaiting word from other colleges in New York, Oregon and Washington before making a decision.

Illaria took a five-year break between high school and college, and she encourages students to make the most of their time here.

“I think the worst thing you can do is become disengaged — wherever you are.”

Ruth Morrison, automotive whiz

Ruth Morrison is an automotive whiz. She’s also the author of a monthly newspaper column about cars.

Ruth came to SMCC in 2005 and is now chair of the Automotive Technology Department. Before turning to teaching, she was worked for as a mechanic at dealerships and independent shops, and as a master senior technician for Ford Motor Co.

Ruth recently began writing about all things cars in her monthly column, “On Maine Roads,” for the Portland Press Herald.

Her favorite part of teaching is getting to know the students and being around their energy.

“I love getting to know them and helping them find a way to support themselves.”
