Housing Application & Assignment Process |

Southern Maine Community College is committed to providing an on-campus living experience that is more than just a place to sleep between classes and weekends at home. We hope that our students will become involved in campus and residence hall activities and meet other students to foster personal growth and create an academic network that will enable all resident students to succeed in their major(s) of choice.
Residence hall space is limited at SMCC; there are just 409 beds available for nearly 6000 students. Consequently, the College has created a housing application process that requires students to demonstrate their commitment to their educational goals in order to be assigned to housing.
Students who submit a complete application packet that includes the application, transcript and deposits are first assigned to a conditional waiting list while they complete the remainder of the process. Students who complete the entire process are assigned to the appropriate active waiting list (male or female) if housing is full or to a space in housing on a first come, first served basis.
Applying for HousingPlease read the the New Student Residence Hall Procedures & Application carefully for housing eligibility criteria and further instructions. Complete the application and submit it to the Student Billing Office with all requested materials and the $150 damage deposit and $100 room deposit. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
Room AssignmentsInitial hall/room assignments and roommate information are sent via regular mail in late July. Students who are assigned to housing from the waiting list after the initial mailing has gone out will be notified via email. All assignments are subject to change to accommodate the daily changing occupancy needs of the College. The College will make every effort to notify students of changes to their room and roommate assignments; however, this is not always possible.
When You May Occupy Your RoomStudents may occupy their rooms on the dates specified in the Academic Calendar; however, they are expected to vacate the halls during the Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Breaks. They can leave their belongings but cannot physically live in their room; the College is unable to accept responsibility for personal belongings during the semester or during a break and strongly suggests that students consider insuring property against loss, damage, theft and fire.
If you are not eligibleWe recognize that sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that make it impossible for a student to complete our process as requested, especially if a student does not meet all the eligibility criteria. If you encounter such an obstacle, please submit a Housing Appeal Form to the Director of Student Life.
