Southern Maine Community College houses 129 students on campus right now and will be opening a new 320 bed residence hall in Fall 2008. SMCC houses another 175 in off campus residence hall housing at two neighboring colleges, but the large majority of students at SMCC are commuter students.
Because finding parking available close to classes can be challenging at peak class times, SMCC encourages students to utilize the South Portland Bus Service. There is a bus stop right outside the Cates Administration Building at the intersection of Fort Road and Benjamin Pickett Street in the center of campus, and the Willard Square Route stops there regularly. Bus schedules are available in the Student Services Office in the Campus Center and on the City of South Portland's web site at www.southportland.org. SMCC students can purchase 10-ride bus passes in the Campus Bookstore in the Campus Center and can ride the bus for free with their student ID at the beginning of each Fall semester.
There are two places on campus that provide meals and snacks - the Dining Hall, which is a full cafeteria and the Cafe in the Campus Center for lighter meals. There are two Student Lounges located in the Campus Center and smaller lounges and study areas located in several of the academic buildings.
Commuting students have traditionally provided a large percentage of the students involved in the Student Senate, other student organizations, and the inter-collegiate athletic program.
