Actress and writer Angela Shelton, who produced the award-winning documentary, "Searching for Angela Shelton," will give a public showing of her film and a talk on healing from abuse April 15, at 7 pm in Jewett Auditorium at Southern Maine Community College. Advocates from Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM) will be available. A $5 suggested donation to benefit SARSSM. Free for students. The SMCC Student Senate sponsors the presentation.

At 27, Shelton set out to create a documentary with the goal to survey American women by interviewing those who shared her name. What she found was that 70 percent of these women had been victims of rape, childhood sexual assault and/or domestic violence. This surprising journey led Shelton to confront her own abusive past, and her documentary started a grassroots movement of healing for survivors of abuse of all genders.

Shelton is also the superhero, “Safe Side Super Chick,” who teaches children how to be safe in the Safe Side video series created by Baby Einstein creator Julie Clark, and "America's Most Wanted" creator John Walsh. She has created the Angela Shelton Foundation with the mission of inspiring and empowering all survivors of abuse to heal and lead joyful lives.
