Wilfred Beriau, certified executive chef (CEC), certified culinary educator (CCE), American Academy of Chefs (AAC), and SMCC professor and chair of the Culinary Arts department, has received the American Culinary Federation, Inc., (ACF) Chef Educator of the Year Award.
The Chef Educator of the Year Award pays tribute to an active culinary educator whose knowledge, skills and expertise have given culinary students the leadership and guidance for the future. Beriau was one of four finalists to compete for the national award.
Beriau, of Gray, has more than 35 years of experience in the culinary industry. He began his career working as a chef at Bill's restaurant in Eastham, Mass., in 1969 and has since held various positions including chef de cuisine at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in NH and executive chef at the Oar House Restaurant, also in NH. He has taught at SMCC for 23 years. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and holds a master's degree from the University of Southern Maine.
Beriau has won numerous culinary awards, including Chef of the Year from the Maine Restaurant Association in 2005, Faculty Member of the Year at SMCC in 2000, and the Silver Beaver Award from Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America. He also received an ACF President's Medallion in 1999 and 2007, serves as spokesperson for the Maine Lobster Promotion Council, and has hosted twenty, one-hour TV cooking shows. His ACF involvement spans his membership of more than 30 years.
The American Culinary Federation, Inc., established in 1929, is the premier professional organization for culinarians in North America.
SMCC offers an associate in applied science degree in culinary arts. The program runs an upscale epicurean "lab", offering patrons a gourmet dining experience with cuisine produced by SMCC culinary arts students and faculty. The department will begin taking reservations for fall luncheons on September 3, 2008 at 207-741-5612.
