On Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 35 high school students from Bath, Boothbay, Brunswick, Farmington, Portland, Topsham, and Wiscasset schools enjoyed a day-long event designed to create opportunity awareness among high school students of high growth, high wage jobs – here in Maine. The event was sponsored by Maine's North Star Alliance (NSAI); SMCC's Maine Advanced Technology Center (MATC); Coastal Enterprises, Inc.; and Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc.
As part of the event, students traveled to Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay and Maloney Rigging in Southport for informative tours of companies using technology in boat building and marine trades.

Student then took place in a competitive challenge in which students designed and created model boats that were tested in a water tank with time trials. The winning design team was acknowledged with an award.
"Southern Maine Community College is committed to exposing students to career possibilities that Maine has to offer," says Steven Schaefer, Director of MATC. "Some of the strongest and the oldest careers lie in the marine trades."
