Commencement 2008
Saturday, May 17, at noon

Cumberland County Civic Center

Commencement is right around the corner and it's important to be prepared for the big day, so make sure you check here for information about your graduation. This page will be updated frequently.

No tickets are required for Commencement.  There are plenty of seats available for relatives and friends!  Printed announcements and envelopes are for sale at the SMCC bookstore in the campus center.  Doors open at 10:45 am. (Download a diagram of the Civic Center [pdf file] .)

A letter with detailed information about the ceremony [MS Word File] will be mailed on or around April 4 to students who have applied and are eligible to participate.

IF YOU HAVEN'T APPLIED TO GRADUATE, IT'S TOO LATE TO GET YOUR DIPLOMA ON MAY 17! However, if you qualify to graduate, you may be able to participate in Commencement.  You must submit a graduation application [MS Word File] to Enrollment Services by April 15.  Eligibility to participate in Commencement can only be determined once you have applied to graduate.

FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO'VE ALREADY APPLIED TO GRADUATE:
If you are graduating or are eligible to "walk" (meaning you will not be getting your diploma this May but have 6 or fewer credits to complete your degree) AND have indicated you will participate, your name should appear in the list on the student portal (login required). If your name does not appear and you believe it should be listed, please send an email to sgrasky@smccme.edu.

IF YOU'VE ALREADY APPLIED TO GRADUATE BUT SAID YOU WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN COMMENCEMENT AND HAVE SINCE CHANGED YOUR MIND, please send an email to lbarteaux@smccme.edu by April 15 with your height and weight so that we can order your cap and gown.

Keynote Speaker: Kevin Sweeney

Kevin Sweeney is chair of the English Department at SMCC. An alumnus of Peaks Island School, he began his education in a one-room school house in 1952. His poetry has been published in a wide variety of literary magazines around the country, and his chapbook Rags of Prayer has received two nominations for a Pushcart Prize in poetry. He holds a B.A. from California State College in California, Pennsylvania, and an M.F.A. in English/Creative Writing from University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Sweeney taught high school for 5 years at Gateway Regional High School in western Massachusetts and has taught at SMCC for 25 years. He has also served 7 terms as the state-wide president of the Community College Faculty Association. As an actor he has appeared in summer theater productions of The Rainmaker, Death of a Salesman, Guys and Dolls, Born Yesterday, and the first American production of the Russian play The Dragon. He also appeared in Academy Award winning director Jan Kadar's film American Moments as "assorted townspeople."

ON GRADUATION DAY, you must report to the Cumberland County Civic Center no earlier than 10:45 AM and no later than 11:15 AM. When you arrive, please go to the Spring Street Concourse, where tables will be set up (alphabetically by last name) for you to pick up your index card. (Download a  diagram of the Civic Center [pdf file].) After getting your index card, please proceed to the back of the stage, where you will find your department's banner. (Banners will be arranged alphabetically by department.)  Graduating students will line up and process in by department. If you are graduating with two degrees, you will have two index cards to pick up and may choose to go up to the stage twice, once for each major.

When you are called to the stage during the ceremony, you will receive an empty diploma cover. As you recess from the ceremony, please follow the marshals, who will lead you to the Spring Street Concourse, where you will pick up your diploma. (This is the same place where you picked up your index card before the ceremony.) If you applied to graduate after March 31 or have credits remaining to complete your degree, you will not receive your diploma at this time.

PLEASE CONTACT THE STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE (741-5505) IF YOU OR ANY RELATIVE NEEDS SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS OR SEATING.  There will be an interpreter for the hearing impaired at the graduation ceremony.

Let your loved ones know you're graduating! Graduation announcements are available for purchase in the SMCC Bookstore after April 7. Supplies are limited and sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rose Sale: On the day of the ceremony, your family and friends can purchase roses from the Phi Theta Kappa table located in the lobby of the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Help Battle Illiteracy And Hunger: Phi Theta Kappa will be collecting books and non-perishable, canned goods on the day of the ceremony. Please help feed the bodies and minds of children in need by bringing donations to the table located in the Civic Center Lobby.
