Library Cards

Your SMCC ID is your library card. IDs are issued at the Campus Security Office.

Loan Periods

• Books are loaned for a three week period and may be renewed for another three week period.


• DVD's, CD's and videos are loaned for one week and may be renewed for another week.


• Periodicals do not circulate. However, the Library does provide a public access photocopier and copies can be made for research or study needs. Copies are ten cents per page.


• Reserve materials are loaned out at a faculty member's discretion. Some material may only be used within the Library. Other materials may be checked out for a 24-hour or one week period.

Interlibrary loan and online requested material is subject to the lending library's loan rules. Consult a SMCC Library staff member for more information. Materials borrowed directly from other libraries are also subject to the lending library's loan rules.

Late Fees and Other Fines

Overdue SMCC material is fined at $0.25 a day. Late fees may be accrued up to $15.00 per item. Lost, damaged or non-returned material is billed to the student's account and will equal the cost of material plus a $20.00 processing fee.

Overdue online requested material is fined at ten cents a day. Late fees may be accrued up to $15.00 per item. Lost, damaged or non-returned material is billed to the student's account and the cost will be determined by the lending library.

Any outstanding fees may result in suspension of his/her student's library privileges and/or a hold placed on his/her college account.

Overdue notices are sent via email as a courtesy.

Borrowing Privileges at Other Libraries

SMCC students, faculty and staff may also borrow books from the following libraries using their SMCC ID.

South Portland Public Library
Maine College of Art
Saint Joseph's College
University of New England
University of Southern Maine

All materials borrowed are subject to the lending library's policies.

Donations/Gifts

The library welcomes gifts with the understanding that they will be evaluated using the same criteria as purchased materials. Gifts will be acknowledged by the library upon request but monetary evaluations cannot be provided pursuant to IRS regulations. The library reserves the right to dispose of donations through sales, gifting to other institutions, or recycling.

Find Materials on Reserve

Books and articles may be placed on library reserve at a faculty member's request. Reserve materials are loaned out at a faculty member's discretion. Some material may only be used within the Library. Other materials may be checked out for a 24 hour or one week period.
