12.10.2009- Women's Basketball Update

  rich.jpg

South Portland ME- The women’s basketball team got off to a sluggish start this season. In their first five games of the season the Seawolves record was 1-4. Coach Roak and her team have since turned things around, and the Seawolves are in the midst of a three game winning streak.

While the women struggled through their first couple games, the team has found it within themselves to turn the ship around. Turnovers were costly during the slump, but since then the Seawolves have learned to take better control of the ball. The Seawolves are now playing with more confidence and are now seeing the results on the court. The Seawolves are currently 4-4 on the season and 4-1 in the conference.

Rachel Del Camp, a sophomore for the Seawolves leads the team in scoring averaging 16.5 points per game.  Del Camp is also second on the team in rebounds averaging 7.3 rebounds a game.

Alisa Sweet, a freshman from Portland High School has stepped up big as a first year player and has earned a starting spot in the post alongside Del Camp averaging 15.4 points per game and 12 rebounds per game. She has tallied six double-doubles on the season.

Brittany Rich, a sophomore for SMCC is the glue to the Seawolves team. Her defensive intensity has jumped the Seawolves into the winning streak.  Rich is also dishing out 4.3 assist per game which is leading the team in that category.

The Seawolves look to close out the semester with games against Hesser College and then a battle against in state rival Central Maine Community College.

12.08.2009 - Seawolves Women Stay Hot

The Seawolves had three players in double-digits. Alisa Sweet had a game high 25 points. Sweet also had 10 rebounds giving her the sixth double-double on the season. Kimmie Preston followed with 13 points of her own. Rachael Del Camp was a solid contributor with 12 points.

Leading the way for the Moose of UMA was Jasmyn Rose with 14 points. Katie Poirier had 12 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Peaslee followed with 11 points of her own.

The Seawolves next game will be on the road as they travel to Hesser College on Saturday December 12th. The tipoff is scheduled for 1:00pm.

11.22.2009 - CCRI Blasts Past SMCC

South Portland ME- The SMCC women’s basketball team played the Community College of Rhode Island Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves fell to CCRI by the final score of 80-55. With the loss it drops the Seawolves overall record to 1-3 on the season.

The Seawolves were once again plagued with turnovers throughout the contest committing 37 total. This gave CCRI all they needed by converting those turnovers into points at the other end.

Leading scorers for the Seawolves were Rachel Del Camp and Alisa Sweet who had 16 points a piece.  Sweet was also active in the rebound department with 14 total rebounds. Amanda Chandler played well scoring 10 points for the Seawolves.

Leading the way for CCRI was Erica Pisaturo with 19 total points and Nole Bullock chipped in with 15 of her own.

SMCC will next play on the road, Tuesday, November 24th at 6:00pm. The Seawolves will travel to Bangor to take on conference opponent Eastern Maine Community College.

11.12.09 - Seawolves Down Unity College

delcamp.jpgSOUTH PORTLAND — A lackluster effort in a scrimmage on Wednesday morphed into the exact opposite on Thursday night as the Southern Maine Community College women’s basketball team used a suffocating defense to handle Unity College 79-24 in its Yankee Small College Conference home opener.

“Last night we went up to Maine Maritime and got a little bit embarrassed by their defensive pressure, so I tried to reiterate to them that that’s what we need to do to teams, so it was kind of a teaching tool for us,” said SMCC coach Becky Roak. “That was our main focus, to pick up our defensive intensity. Right of the bat we were going to do it against Unity, a conference opponent, a conference rival. We had to.”

The Seawolves (1-1) led 21-3 less than eight minutes into the game and held a 41-18 edge at halftime, forcing the Rams into 24 first-half turnovers and 44 for the game.

“We definitely played as a team,” said sophomore Rachel Del Camp of South Portland, who led SMCC with 18 points. “We’ve been working on our defense in practice a lot. We just have to focus on helping each other out and playing together.”

Kimmie Preston and Alisa Sweet, both freshmen from Portland, each added 13 points for the Seawolves.

Freshman Nicole Poland (Cushing, Maine) came off the bench to score eight and spark SMCC on both ends of the court.

“She stepped up big as the sixth man, the first player off the bench,” Roak said. “She stepped it up both defensively and offensively tonight. She had a lot of intensity.”

webster.jpgBrittany Rich (Madison, Maine) had 11 assists for the Seawolves, while Sweet led the team with eight rebounds and Becky Creveling (Berwick, Maine) had seven steals.

SMCC shot only 35 percent from the field in the first half, but took 36 more shots than the Rams and led 41-18 at the break.

“We’re a run-and-gun type of team,” Roak said. “We can slow it down and set up an offense as well, but we like to get up in their shorts, get some steals and get some fast-break points.”

The Seawolves scored the first eight points of the second half, and the outcome was never in jeopardy. Even so, there were players diving for loose balls until the final buzzer.

“We definitely have depth on the bench,” Del Camp said. “The score doesn’t matter. We still have to play our game. Everyone has their own role and they know what it is. We just have to come strong every time we play.”

Deidre Ousterhout (Silverton, Ore.) led the Rams with seven points.

The Seawolves are back in action on Nov. 21 when they host Navy Prep at 1 p.m.

11.07.09 - Seawolves Women Drop Season Opener by Way of Turnovers to Dean College

Franklin, MA - The Seawolves women's basketball was hurt by turnovers in their opening game loss 63-58 to Dean College. SMCC held the lead throughout most of the game, but turnovers down the stretch determined the outcome of the game. SMCC drops to 0-1 while Dean improves to 1-0 on the season.

The leading scorers for SMCC were Alisa Sweet and Rachel Del Camp who had 15 points a piece, while Becky Creveling netted 13 of her own. The Seawolves turned the ball over 32 times compared to Dean's 18. Dean was led by Lakeisha Govoni who had 17 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, and four blocks.

The Seawolves will be on the road Wednesday, November 11th as they take on Maine Maritime Academy in an exhibition game and will then have their home opener the following day against Unity College.  Game time is set for 6:00pm.

Women's Basketball 2009-10 Outlook

South Portland - The Seawolves squad of seven returning players along with seven newcomers has high expectations for this new season.  The nucleus of veteran leadership along with the influx of talented rookies should prove favorable for the women's basketball program.

Junior point guard, Darcey Webster (Windham, ME) who was the vocal leader last season will have her work cut out for her again this year as she puts the team on her shoulders, meshing old and new.  Webster was an YSCC All-Conference player last season that averaged 8.8 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, and passed out 88 assists.  Webster will be in charge of orchestrating the offense again this season.

Returning guards, sophomore Brittany Rich (Madison, ME) and senior Amanda Chandler (Cherryfield, ME) will help Webster at the guard position after both having strong first seasons in a Seawolves uniform.  The Seawolves could always count on Rich for her solid, steady play.  Defensively, she was always there to pick the team up. Chandler on the other hand was there to hit a big three when the team needed one.  Chandler averaged 10.3 points per game with a season total of 155 points.  The team needs both Rich and Chandler to step up big again this season.

The lone post player returning from last season's squad is sophomore Rachel Del Camp (South Portland, ME).  Losing her counterpart Sonya O'Tash to graduation, Del Camp has big shoes to fill.  Del Camp an YSCC All-Conference player was the second leading scorer and rebounder on the team averaging 12.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.

Rounding out the veteran group are sophomore Roxanne Creveling (Berwick, ME), junior Tonya Cole (Auburn, ME), and senior Amy Greene (Windham, ME) whom will all contribute significant minutes this season.

Despite losing the 2009 YSCC Player of the Year O'Tash, the Seawolves are hopeful because of the talented newcomers that will come in and make an immediate impact. Freshman, Alisa Sweet (Portland, ME) could play either the guard or small forward positions and will make that immediate impact.  Sweet is a welcomed addition to the team and brings a sense of competitiveness and drive to be successful.  Other newcomers of note this season are two guard Becky Creveling (Berwick, ME) and point guard Miranda Gove (Exeter, ME).  Creveling has the range to knock down shots from anywhere on the court and will be key to opening up our inside game.  However, Gove's role will be a lock down defender whose quickness and agility will be much needed against tough conference opponents like CMCC and NHTI.

Rounding out the rookie group are two-guards Mandy Smith (Shapleigh, ME) and Kimmie Preston (Portland, ME), point guard, Nicole Poland (Cushing, ME) and Rachel Torrey (Woodland, ME).

With a crew of seven returners and seven newcomers, the Seawolves basketball team will have to continue to learn each other's styles as they move forward as one unit.    The Seawolves are looking to rebound from a deflating 2009 championship game loss to CMCC after going 15 - 0 in conference play.

"Defensively we will be smaller than we've been in the past, but on the other hand will be quicker than in the past too.  We are going to have to get out and run, which we love to do," said head coach Becky Roak.

The Seawolves play a tough conference and non-conference schedule this season.  Last season there were multiple coaching changes on the women's side.  "I look forward to seeing what the competition will be like in the conference this season.  There were some great coaches hired and I am anxious to see what they bring to the table," said Roak.

Tough out of conference schools on the schedule are CCRI, Briarcliffe College, and St. Joseph's College of NY.

"I am excited for this season's challenges and successes.  This team amazes me each day with their dedication and work ethic. I know there hard work will pay off," states Roak
