SMCC Announces 2007 Athletic Hall of Fame Class
South Portland - Southern Maine Community College is pleased to announce the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2007. Four inductees will be honored during a banquet on Sunday, October 14, 2007, at 1pm in the HUB Athletics Center on the South Portland Campus. Mike Welch (baseball '83) was a catcher on the 1982 and 1983 baseball teams that won back-to-back New England Small College Conference titles. During those two seasons Welch was perfect behind the plate, and did not commit one error. He finished with a career batting average of .362 while hitting twelve home runs. Welch resides in Greenville, SC, and currently works in the law enforcement field.
Dale Storey (basketball '88) played during the 1987-88 seasons where he compiled 1,164 total points (third all-time for scoring leaders at the College). Storey also ranks within the top ten all-time at the College for rebounds (second with 785), steals (tied for 6th with 82) and blocks (9th at 61). Upon graduation from SMCC, Storey continued his athletic success at the University of Maine-Farmington where he played two more seasons. Storey resides in Cumberland and works for Hancock Lumber.
Ira "Doc" Stockwell was the head men's basketball coach from 1988-1995. During that time his teams compiled a 153-72 overall record, which ranks him second all-time in the men's basketball program for overall wins. His teams also won seven Maine Small College Conference titles, four Northern New England Small College Conference titles, and competed in two National Small College Conference tournaments--the College's first ever appearance in any national tournament. Stockwell resides in Westbrook and continues to practice in family medicine.
Carroll Rines was the College's long time sports information director. For over 20 years Rines covered SMCC teams and was charged with providing statistical data and overall team records and accomplishments to the local media. The Athletic department's Sports Person of the Year Award is named in his honor. Rines will be inducted posthumously.
