11.20.2009 - Findlay Reaches Milestone in Win Over Navy Prep

South Portland, ME - The Seawolves came out with a balanced attack and took tonight's contest against Navy Prep by a score of 95-82. Coleman Findlay stole most of the attention by being the 14th player in Seawolves history to score 1,000 points. He was eight points shy coming into tonight's contest and reached this milestone in the first half. SMCC moves to 3-3 on the season.

Coleman Findlay had 21 points along with nine rebounds. Michael Burchill dropped in 18 points. Matt Findlay, Paul Holland, and Eric Nelson all had 13 points while Kory Martin chipped in with 10 points of his own. For Navy Prep, Dan Cozad had a game high 22 points and Kendall O'Neill had 20 points.

The Seawolves will next battle the Community College of Rhode Island. The game is scheduled for this Sunday at 2:00pm.

When your opponent shoots better than 60 percent from the floor and you turn the ball over 24 times your chances of winning get smaller and smaller. Despite this happening Saturday at Southern Maine Community College the Seawolves were within two points with less than three minutes left in the game before falling to Apprentice School 72-60 in front of a good sized home crowd.

The Seawolves trailed by five at the half 38-33 and closed the gap to 60-58 in the final minutes before Apprentice went on a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach. Coleman Findley (South Portland High School) led the Seawolves with a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals) while brother Matt Findley (South Portland High School) was the only other scorer in double figures (11 points, 5 assists, 2 steals).

Apprentice had four players in double figures, Isaih Harrison led the offence with 18 points, Quinton Square 13, Christopher Hearn 12 and Lewis Archer 11. Apprentice out rebounded the Seawolves 29-22, but it was the defensive boards for Apprentice that made the difference with 20 of their rebounds coming on that end of the floor. SMCC shot 39.3 percent from field goal range; they were 8-of-24 from three point range for 33.3 percent.

The Seawolves only went to the line six times where they hit four shots for 66.7 percent. Apprentice was 62.3 percent from field goal range and 1-of-3 from behind the arc for 33.3 percent shooting. They went to the foul line 16 times hitting a dismal five shots for a 31.3 percentage.

Southern Maine falls to 2-3 on the young season and will host Navy Prep on Nov. 20 with a 6:30 tip off time scheduled.

11.12.2009 - Seawolves Win Home Opener

burchill.jpgSOUTH PORTLAND - The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team was firing on all cylinders in its home opener. The Seawolves had 14 players score points as they eased their way to a 107-22 rout of undermanned Unity College in Thursday night's Yankee Small College Conference contest in South Portland. SMCC improved to 2-2.

Coleman Findlay paced a balanced offensive attack with 18 points. Fellow South Portland High graduate Josh Mackie came off the bench to add 14, while Michael Burchill (Saco, Maine) chipped in 13 and Paul Holland (London, England) scored 11.

Unity made the trip south with only seven players, as illness, injury and academic commitments forced several players to stay behind, and the Rams never stood a chance in this one.

Mackie scored eight straight points - including two of his three 3-point baskets  - during a two-minute stretch that put SMCC up 40-3 with 5:39 left in the first half. Holland scored five points in the final 30 seconds of the half to make it 60-7 at the break.

The Seawolves got all 15 players plenty of action, with their starters sitting most of the second half. "This was good because it allowed us to work on some things," said SMCC coach Matt Richards. "It got some guys some shots. It got them to execute. I'm happy because we still did our stuff. We preached that at halftime. Regardless of the opponent, we need to execute the same things that we need to against better opponents. And we did that."

A nifty driving layup by Tyler Cummings (Farmingdale, Maine) with 5:35 left in the game put SMCC over the century mark with a 101-16 lead.

c.findlay.jpgThe Seawolves shot 54 percent from the field while holding the Rams to 16 percent, and controlled the boards with a 54-31 rebounding edge. They also made 20 steals.

And while it was Findlay who was often finishing underneath, Richards said Eric Nelson (Portland, Maine) deserves some of the credit.

"Eric has done a great job of being the guy that does all the little things," Richards said. "Coleman gets a lot of easy baskets because Eric works extremely hard at creating space. Coleman gets the benefit of Eric's hard work. Those two guys I thought did a nice job."

SMCC has a veteran starting front line of juniors Coleman Findlay, Matt Findlay and Nelson, with freshmen Mike Von Rotz (Cooper, Maine) and Daniel Foster (South Portland) starting at the point guard and shooting guard, respectively.

"We have a good rotation going right now," Nelson said. "The freshman point guards are stepping up. They're learning at every practice and every game. They're getting more mature. Coming down the stretch they'll be ready to go."

Kory Martin (Saco) returned from illness to score nine points for the Seawolves. Jack Shermon (Southport, ME) led the team with 11 rebounds.

Josh Ross (Dixmont, Maine) led Unity with 11 points.

SMCC returns to action on Saturday, hosting Apprentice School at 1 p.m. The Seawolves are anticipating a much closer contest.

"We've got a big one on Saturday," Coleman Findlay said. "We've got to come out and be ready to play."

11.03.2009 - Men's Basketball Team Dominated by Dean College

Franklin, MA - The Seawolves men's basketball team was beat last Saturday by a score of 93-67. Turnovers proved costly as the Seawolves turned the ball over 33 times. This brings the Seawolves overall record to 1-2. Dean gets their season off to a great start and move to 1-0.

The leading scorers for the Seawolves were Mike Von Rotz who had 17 points, Coleman Findlay scored 11, and Josh Mackie had nine points. Dean College was led by Josh Hodge who scored 34 points, six steals, and five assists.

The Seawolves will next travel to Maine Maritime Academy in an exhibition game on Wednesday, November 11th. SMCC will then have their home opener on Thursday, November 12th as they take on YSCC opponent Unity College.  Game time is set for 8:00pm.

2009-2010 Men's Basketball Outlook

South Portland - The 2009-2010 Seawolves are set to begin their quest for the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) title.  Last season the Seawolves fell short of that accomplishment as injuries late in the year took its toll on the team reaching that milestone.  In order to reach a trip to the conference championships, seven returning players, one transfer, and seven new additions to the Seawolves will need to develop team chemistry and play a challenging schedule in order to complete this goal!

"The success of this season will be how well we as a staff do to incorporate the talents of the new players with the experience of our returnees, stated Richards.  This is something that we've talked about all preseason and will continue to be a point of emphasis all season long."

Expectations are high, always high for the program which has won two conference championships in the past three seasons.  Last year's team finished with a 17-11 mark which was good for third overall in the conference.

"The program has seen a tremendous amount of success over the past couple of seasons.  By not carrying on that same expectation would be doing our former and current players a disservice," said Richards.

To help with the upcoming season, Richards expects to see leadership and talented play from a core group of returnees.  South Portland graduates Matt and Coleman Findlay are two players who saw extensive action the last two seasons.  Coleman (20.6ppg  9.3rpg) was named to the first team YSCC along with earning USCAA All-American honors, will look to give the Seawolves a strong presence in the post.  Matt ( 9.7ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.6apg) will again be asked to be versatile in his play.  Eric Nelson returns after his first year with the Seawolves (6.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg).  He missed a portion of the year due to injury but has had a strong off season and looks to give the Seawolves a solid inside presence to complement the team.  To aid in the inside play is a pair of centers, Kory Martin (6.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and Jack Sherman (1.9 ppg, 1.3rpg).  Both Martin and Sherman bring great size and ability to the floor.  Also returning is guards Josh Mackie (4.8 rpg 36% 3pt) and Rocky Flores (1.6 rpg).

This group will get some immediate help in experience from a transfer.  Mike Burchill who played at Thomas College for the last two seasons.  Burchill was North Atlantic Conference All Tournament player his second season for the Terriers.  During his second season at Thomas he averaged 11ppg.  Burchill gives the Seawolves some much needed depth and experience.

Many new faces will be wearing the Seawolves blue and white.  The recruiting efforts proved to be very good this past year   At the guard position Richards will be looking at Dan Foster (Cheverus H.S.), Paul Holland (London, England), Zach Caparaso (Pasco, FL), Tyler Cummings (Hall-Dale H.S.), Mike Von Rotz, (Washington Academy), Matt Smith (Washington Academy), and forwards Jeff Hughes (Portland H.S.) and Kaleb Danico (Ellsworth H.S.)

"Our new players bring much needed talent to the program.  How the develop into our system will be how far we can take this team," stated Richards.

SMCC opens the season with the 15th annual Can-Am Tournament hosted at Central Maine C.C.  After that the team hits the road again to play against a very talented Dean College program before returning home to get Unity College then USCAA Division I power Apprentice School (VA).  Right before the Thanksgiving break the team has  an important stretch of games that include Navy Prep, NJCAA national tournament participant CCRI and then conference foe EMCC.  Once the team returns after the holiday break a tough Yankee Small College Conference schedule continue throughout December before concluding with their annual rival game against Central Maine C.C. on December 15th.

Second semester non conference opponents include 2009 USCAA Division I National Runner up Rochester College (MI), John Abbot College (Canada) Northern Essex C.C. and St. Joe's of Brooklyn NY.
