10/20/09- SMCC Baseball Finishes Fall Season 10-6
South Portland - The Seawolves baseball team wrapped up their fall season this past Saturday. The Seawolves were the regular season YSCC champions and went into the fall tournament as the number one seed in the NECA Baseball Championship. These games were held at Hadlock Field, Portland Maine. The first game for SMCC was against Vermont Tech. College; the Seawolves won this game by a score of 4-2 on the arm of Dan Walker who threw a complete game. This earned the team a spot in the Championship game. SMCC fell short against NHTI-Concord's Community College by a score of 8-3. This was NHTI's first championship since 2005. The Lynx picked up 14 hits and Kevin Lee threw a complete game five hitter while striking out seven for the win.
Centerfielder Josh Mackie (South Portland, ME) led the team in hitting with an average of .417. Other leaders for the Seawolves this fall included sophomore short stop David Nieves (York, ME) who hit .357. Freshman second baseman Scott Madden (Saco, ME) helped establish the Seawolves middle infield as a force along with Nieves. Madden hit .349 and was key in the middle of the order. Behind the plate was sophomore Dave Nealley (Portland, ME) who hit .302 and led the Seawolves defense and pitching staff. On the mound, Dan Walker (Falmouth, ME) led the charge with a record of 4-1 and was the most clutch pitcher.
The Seawolves are looking forward to building on their success from the fall and carrying it over to the spring season.
09/20/09 - SMCC earns split against Navy Prep
South Portland - The SMCC baseball team took on Navy Prep in a double-header on Sunday afternoon. Navy Prep took the first game by the score of 7-3. SMCC got revenge in the second game by winning 5-4. SMCC record goes to 5-4 with the split while Navy Prep goes to 3-2 on the season.
The Seawolves have been playing good baseball and look to continue things on the road Wednesday September 23rd as they face Bridgton Academy.
09/19/09 - Seawolves split double-header with NHTI
South Portland - The Seawolves were on the road this Saturday as they faced conference rivals NHTI in a double-header. The Seawolves took the first game by a score of 13-8. In game two, the Lynx would get some revenge by beating the Seawolves 5-1. With the split, SMCC's record moves to 4-3 and NHTI goes to 4-4.
The Seawolves scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to steal game one of the double-header. Tyler Kelly and Scott Madden each hit two-run doubles to get the rally going. Josh Mackie chipped in three RBI'S for SMCC to seal the 13-5 victory over the Lynx. In game two the Seawolves were not as fortunate as they fall 5-1 to a seasoned NHTI squad.
The next day the Seawolves took on Navy Prep in a double-header. The Seawolves managed a split in the double-header.
09/16/2009 - Seawolves blank Mustangs
South Portland - The SMCC baseball team took on Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) rivals CMCC on Wednesday afternoon at the Wainwright Complex in South Portland. The Seawolves shut out the Mustangs 2-0 and improve their overall record to 3-2.
Freshman, Nate Curran pitched a complete game shutout striking out seven batters, and only allowing four hits. Nate Curran also helped his own cause by scoring in Scott Madden in the bottom of the first inning. Later in the inning, Josh Mackie drove in Dave Nealley on a RBI double. That's all SMCC needed to blanked out the Mustangs 2-0.
The baseball team will be on the road this weekend as they take on YSCC foe NHTI, Concord's Community College in a double-header starting at 12:00pm.
10/22/2008 - SMCC Fall Athletes Honored
South Portland - Southern Maine Community College is proud to announce ten fall athletes were honored with post season awards as well as one coach selected as YSCC Coach of the Year.
The Seawolves softball team won their second consecutive YSCC Fall Softball Championship and had four players honored as YSCC All-Conference team selections; Darcey Webster (Windham, ME), Melissa Sanborn (Gorham, ME), Kim Hunt (Oakland, ME), and Rachel Del Camp (South Portland, ME). Webster was also honored as the YSCC Player of the Year. Webster finished the fall season with a 0.543 batting average, 10 RBI's, and scored 18 runs.
The Seawolves women's soccer team had one player selected to the YSCC All-Conference team. Senior defender, Brooke Hardy (Holden, ME) was the anchor for the Seawolves defense. She was the captain and did all the intangibles for the team.
Alexander Jenkins (Harpers Ferry, WV) from the Seawolves men's soccer team was selected to the YSCC 2008 Men's All-Conference team for his leadership qualities. Jenkins and his team were 3-9-0 overall and fell to CMCC in the first round of the YSCC playoffs. Jenkins led the team this season in goals scored with three and also had two assists.
The Seawolves baseball team coached by the 2008 YSCC Coach of the Year, Phil Desjardins finished the fall season 13-1 overall and were the regular season champions. The baseball team had four players selected to the YSCC All-Conference team Scott Nappi (Portland, ME), Kyle Egbert (Gorham, ME), Coleman Findlay (South Portland, ME) and Nate Leeman (South Portland, ME). Nappi was also named YSCC Player of the year for the second consecutive year. Nappi finished the fall season with a 0.487 batting average, 14 RBI's, and had no error in the field.
The Southern Maine Community College family would like to congratulate the athletes above for their outstanding play this fall.
10/2/2008 - SMCC's Baseball Coach Reaches Milestone
South Portland- SMCC's baseball coach Phil Desjardins reached a milestone in his coaching career this past Tuesday, September 23rd after his team swept Central Maine CC 6-0 and 4-3. Desjardins is the first head baseball coach at SMCC to reach a combined 200 career wins.
Desjardins started out his coaching career at St. Joseph's College (ME) where he spent 5 seasons; three as an assistant and two as head coach. In his two seasons as head coach of the Monks, Desjardins and his team were the NAIA Northeast Division Champions for back to back seasons. Desjardins then spent two seasons as head coach at Westbrook College before taking over the baseball program at SMCC.
Desjardins has been at the helm of the Seawolves for the past 13 season and has qualified for post season play 10 of those 13 years including one trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship and back-to-back Yankee Small College Conference Championships in 2006 and 2007. His team is the number one seed heading into this weekend's YSCC Fall Championships and look to capture their 3rd consecutive YSCC Championship.

Coach Desjardins is an outstanding individual who holds the balance of creating a competitive baseball environment with teaching the right life lessons for our student-athletes. SMCC has been blessed to have Coach Desjardins at the helm of our baseball program."
Desjardins has had the opportunity to coach some of the top baseball players in the state. This season's squad has the 2007 YSCC Player of the Year, Scott Nappi. Nappi who was an SMAA All-State 1st Team, Maine Sunday Telegram All-Star and SMAA Defensive Player of the Year for Portland High School continues to impress both offensively and defensively. Coach Desjardins also had the pleasure of coaching USM standout Anthony D'Alfonso who got his start on the diamond at SMCC under Coach Desjardins. While at SMCC, D'Alfonso received many accolades including two time YSCC Player of the Year and USCAA All-American. D'Alfonso has since moved on to play at USM and continues to pile up the awards. D'Alfonso made the 2008 D3Baseball.com All-American Team, ABAC DIII All-American Team, and NCAA DIII New England Baseball Regional All-Tournament Team. D'Alfonso will return to USM for his final season this spring and look to lead the Huskies back to the NCAA DIII Tournament.
9/20/2008 - YSCC Swept NHTI
South Portland - South Portland - Southern Maine Community College faced off with New Hampshire Technical Institute this afternoon. SMCC took both games in the double-header at home. The Seawolves won 5-4 and 4-1 in two well played games with a good mix of hitting and defense.
The Seawolves pulled out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning. NHTI would score in the second on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. SMCC scored one run in the third and fourth inning bring the lead to 4-1. NHTI then came back in the fifth inning to tie it up 4-4. The Seawolves pulled through scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to get the win 5-4.
In the second game of the double-header, SMCC proved to be the victor 4-1. Anthony MacMillan (Gorham, ME) only gave up one run in the sixth inning and tallied the win. Kyle Egbert (Gorham, ME) was big at the plate going 2 for 3 with one RBI.
The Seawolves travel to Auburn, ME for their next double-header against Central Maine CC on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd. First pitch is at 4:00pm.
9/8/2008 - YSCC Player of the Week
South Portland - Sophomore shortstop, Scott Nappi was nominated and selected as YSCC Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against Vermont Technical College.
Nappi led the team offensively in their double-header win over Vermont Technical College this past week. Nappi tallied three hits in 7 at bats, knocked in four runs and had one double and one triple. With Nappi's help the baseball team should have no problems defending their 2007 YSCC Baseball Championship.
9/6/2008 - High Expectations for the Season
South Portland - Southern Maine Community College's head coach Phil Desjardins enters his 13th season at the helm of the Seawolves baseball team chasing another Yankee Small College (YSCC) Championship. Last season the Seawolves finished 23-21 overall and received a birth to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship. Desjardins feels very confident heading into the fall season. "We have a strong nucleus of veterans back and a talented freshman class coming in." said Desjardins.
The Seawolves will defend their 2008 YSCC Champion with strong bats and a solid defensive core. A tough sophomore class including shortstop, Scott Nappi, Dan Walker, Matt and Coleman Findlay, will lead the Seawolves. Coach Desjardins will look for Nappi to post big numbers again this year. Nappi ended the season with a 0.405 batting average and 24 stolen bases. With Coleman Findlay and Dan Walker pitching, the Seawolves will have some stability on the mound. Matt Findlay will start behind the plate again this year.
The Seawolves coaching staff had a program first at tryouts on August 25th. Thirty-five baseball players dressed for tryouts. Head coach Phil Desjardins and newly hired assistant coach Andy Wood had their work cut out for them trying to whittle down to a manageable sized team. The three top new comers for the 2008 fall season are pitchers Kory Martin (South Portland, ME) and Nate Leeman (South Portland, ME) also third baseman, Eddie West (Chicago, IL). Desjardins is looking forward to having some flexibility within positions and also excited about a deep bull pen. "We will have the ability to move players around and not lose a step. We have players that can all hit and field." stated Desjardins.
