2007-08 Men's Basketball Outlook
The 2006-07 Seawolves Men's Basketball squad finished the year in fine fashion. The team completed an outstanding run at the end of the year to capture the Yankee Small College Conference title with a win over Hesser College. The Seawolves then went on to host the USCAA National tournament where they finished 4th overall, the best finish in school history at the national tournament. With this experience under their belts the Seawolves are hungry to defend their title and make a return trip to the national tournament
"Last season was something very special, however we have eight returning players who want to experience that again and feel that we can build upon on experience last year to do even more for this season, " stated Head Coach Matt Richards
Leading that insurgence for the upcoming season is a return group of guards Scott Slack (Oxford Hills H.S.) Mike Worster Rockland H.S.), and Chris Banks (Massabesic H.S.) Richards will be counting on them for their strong perimeter play which will open the floor to help the post game for the Seawolves. Slack (4.2 ppg, 3.2 apg) returns as the starting point guard from last year. Known for his defensive intensity, Coach Richards expressed gratitude to have a floor leader that is as unselfish as him. "Slack has become known throughout the league as one of the premier on the ball defenders that our league has. He truly makes our opponents point guard night difficult," replied Richards
Worster (14.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg) returns for another season after being named first team YSCC all conference and a USCAA All American. "Michael really has become an all around guard that can score in a variety of ways which has made him one of the best guards in our league this year." said Richards. "I really like what he as done to make himself even better for this coming season and he is invaluable has a team leader
Banks (15.2 ppg) returns after a very positive first season for the Seawolves. He was named 2nd team YSCC all conference for his play last year and was named YSCC post season MVP during the play off tournament. "Banks can really shoot the ball. His understanding of how to score in a variety of ways will be a key to his improvements this coming season," stated Richards
The three returning guards are joined by strong group of returning forwards and post players. James Liebowitz Erskine Academy) returns for his third season and brings veteran experience to the lineup. He completed the 2007 season with 11.1 ppg and 6.1 rpg and is a tough match up for teams because of his versatility. "Liebowitz is what you would call a match-up problem for most teams. He can do a little of everything and is good at it," stated Richards
Liebowitz is joined by fellow returning forward Kyle McKague (Bonny Eagle H.S.) McKague was the teams' sixth man last year and added strength inside to the line up averaging 5.9ppg and 4.5 rpg. McKague spent most of the off season developing his offensive skills to give the Seawolves another versatile threat. "When teams think of Kyle they think of his strength. Now they will need to think about his shooting ability as he really has worked hard in the off season to add this to his game," said Richards. Liebowitz and McKague will be joined by returning forward Eli Madsen (Erskine Academy) who will add to the Seawolves with his experience and shooting capacity.
The center position will be complemented by two returning players. Third year player John Glidden (Erskine Academy) returns to the Seawolves line-up after taking a year away from basketball to concentrate on his academic internship requirements. During that time he added strength from hours in the weight room which will really help in during the season.
"He is going to really surprise some people," explained Richards. "He has become a strong presence inside and his experience within our program is going to be extremely valuable." The second returning center is third year player Tim Hagerman (Scarborough, H.S.). He gives the Seawolves experience inside and his known for his energy off the bench defensively.
Another area that gives Richards optimism about the coming season is the recruiting class that came in. Seven new players join the squad giving the team great depth. At the guard position four new players add to the depth chart. Garrett Worster (Rockland H.S.) A.J. Wilkerson (Plainville H.S. CT), Chris Gebhardt (Yarmouth H.S.) and Justin Flores (Marshwood, H.S.). Worster was a standout guard for Rockland this past year. A versatile guard he will be able to play multiple guard positions on the floor. Wilkerson was a first team all state selection in CT. his senior season. He will give depth to the point guard responsibilities for the Seawolves. Gebhardt and Flores both come in with outstanding work ethic and provide perimeter scoring threats.
Joining this incoming class includes forwards Matt and Coleman Findlay (South Portland H.S.) Coleman was a 1st team Southern Maine Activities Association All Conference selection and McDonald's Senior All Star Selection. He will add instant depth at the big forward and center position. His brother Matt is a versatile big guard small forward who has great court vision and will be a versatile player on the floor giving coach Richards many options on how to utilize him
Richards hopes that the returning and incoming players develop team chemistry quickly in hopes of competing against the likes of out of conference opponents Massasoit C.C., Lyndon State College, Naval Academy Prep, Dean College, and the Apprentice School, while competing for the conference championship against always strong Central Maine Community College, New Hampshire Technical Institute, Vermont Technical College, and Hesser College.
