The following are minimum testing and course requirements for admission to the health science programs at SMCC. Note that different programs have slightly different criteria.
Applicants to ALL SMCC programs are required to take the Accuplacer reading, writing, arithmetic and algebra placement tests (if not exempted*).
* Applicants may be exempted from the math section of the Accuplacer if they have completed either a college level math course OR a score of at least 490 on the math portion of the SAT. Applicants may be exempted from the reading and sentence skills sections of the Accuplacer if they have completed a college level English Composition course OR a score of at least 450 on the verbal portion of the SAT. College transcripts and/or SAT scores must be received before an exemption can be made.
General Requirements
- All applicants are required to take the Accuplacer placement test (unless exempt) before being considered for admission.
- All required courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better (no "C-"), unless otherwise noted.
- All applicants must be high school, GED or Adult Diploma graduates prior to the start of the semester for which accepted.
Important Notes
- The applicant is responsible for providing all required documentation to the Enrollment Services office.
- The Accuplacer placement test can be retaken after 2 weeks from test date. The fee for retesting is $10.
- Admission is first-come first-serve to qualified applicants as files become complete.
- Maine residents are given priority. Admission is quite competitive.
- If you have a disability and wish to request accommodations in order to have reasonable access to the programs and services offered by SMCC, you must register with the Disability Services Coordinator, Mark Krogman, who can be reached at 741-5629. Further information about services for students with disabilities and the accommodation process is available upon request.
Students who do not meet the admissions criteria for the health science programs may request to be accepted into General Studies. Students who apply for a program that is currently full will automatically be considered for acceptance to General Studies. This would allow a student to take the required general academic courses.
Students who meet the admission criteria but cannot be accepted because the health science program is full will be given consideration for that specific year/term on a first come, first served basis as space becomes available.
Admissions Criteria:
DIETETIC TECHNOLOGY
Dietetic Technology currently has no additional pre-program requirements. Please see Admissions for general admission requirements.
CARDIOVASCULAR
- Anatomy & Physiology I w/lab (BIOL 130/131)
- Anatomy & Physiology II w/lab (BIOL 135/136)

MEDICAL ASSISTING
Medical Assisting currently has no additional pre-program requirements. Please see Admissions for general admission requirements.
NURSING
(Due to the high volume of qualified applicants, Nursing is restricted to Maine residents, except for the LPN Upgrade)
The nursing program is a full four-semester program, after completing admission requirements (see Program Curriculum). SMCC accepts transfer credits from other accredited colleges if grades are C or better. Students transferring from another nursing program must submit a letter of reference from the Chair of their former nursing program. Clinical nursing credits must be approved by the Chair of the SMCC Nursing Program and cannot be more than one year old – unless the applicant is a LPN upgrade. Qualified LPN’s are exempt from Nursing I – NURS 125.
Students apply to the Nursing Program through Enrollment Services. It is advisable for applicants to submit applications as early as possible due to the large number of applicants. Because many applicants are Maine residents, SMCC cannot consider any out-of-state applicants, except for the LPN-Upgrade option.
Admission Requirements:
- Attend a Mandatory Information Session (attendance is recommended early in the admissions process). Sign up at http://advise.smccme.edu.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Nurse Entrance/HOBET Test - Students must achieve scores of 65 in Reading Comprehension and 65 in math. There is a study guide for preparing for this test available in the College Store (741-5532). We strongly urge you to prepare well for this test, because admission to the Nursing Program is very competitive. Students can only take the test once per academic semester.
You must register for the test, as space is limited. Please go to http://advise.smccme.edu and follow the instructions to sign up for a NET/HOBET test. The password is: NETTEST.
- Take, or be exempt from, the Accuplacer placement test.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in pre-admission requirements.
