Health Science Programs Admissions Criteria PDF Print E-mail
The following are minimum testing and course requirements for admission to the health science programs at SMCC.  Note that different programs have slightly different criteria.

General Requirements

  • Applicants to ALL SMCC programs are required to take the Accuplacer tests in reading, writing, arithmetic and algebra unless otherwise exempt. Please visit www.smccme.edu/tests for details.
  • All required courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better (no "C-"), unless otherwise noted.
  • All applicants must be high school, GED or Adult Diploma graduates prior to the start of the semester for which accepted.
  • Students accepted to a Health Science program have additional requirements such as immunizations, background checks, and drug screening.  Please go to www.smccme.edu/ADB for details.

Important Notes

  • The applicant is responsible for providing all required documentation for admission to the Enrollment Services office.
  • Admission is first-come first-serve to qualified applicants (those who have met the admission requirements as outlined below) as files become complete.
  • Maine residents are given priority.  Admission is quite competitive.
  • If you have a disability and wish to request accommodations in order to have reasonable access to the programs and services offered by SMCC, you must register with the Disability Services Coordinator, Mark Krogman, who can be reached at 741-5629.  Further information about services for students with disabilities and the accommodation process is available upon request.
  • Students who do not meet the admissions criteria for the health science programs may request to be accepted into General Studies.
  • Students who apply for a program that is currently full will automatically be considered for acceptance to General Studies. This would allow a student to take the required general academic courses.
  • Students who meet the admission criteria but cannot be accepted because the health science program is full will be given consideration for that specific year/term on a first come, first served basis as space becomes available.

Admissions Criteria:

CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGY

  • Anatomy & Physiology I w/lab (BIOL 130/131)
  • Anatomy & Physiology II w/lab (BIOL 135/136)
  • Chemistry I w/lab (CHEM-120)
  • College Algebra (MATH 140)
  • English Composition (ENGL 100)

DIETETIC TECHNOLOGY

  • Dietetic Technology currently has no additional pre-program requirements. Please see Admissions for general admission requirements.

MEDICAL ASSISTING

  • Medical Assisting currently has no additional pre-program requirements. Please see Admissions for general admission requirements.
NURSING

Due to the high volume of qualified applicants, Nursing is restricted to Maine residents, except for the LPN Upgrade.

The Nursing program is a full four-semester program, after completing admission requirements (see Program Curriculum). SMCC accepts transfer credits from other accredited colleges if grades are C or better.  Students transferring from another nursing program must submit a letter of reference from the Chair of their former nursing program.  Clinical nursing credits must be approved by the Chair of the SMCC Nursing Program and cannot be more than one year old – unless the applicant is a LPN upgrade. Qualified LPN’s are exempt from Nursing I – NURS 125.

Students apply to the Nursing program through Enrollment Services. It is advisable for applicants to submit applications as early as possible due to the large number of applicants.  Because many applicants are Maine residents, SMCC cannot consider any out-of-state applicants, except for the LPN-Upgrade option.

Admission Requirements:

    • Attend a Mandatory Information Session (see dates below). We highly recommended attendance at a session early in the process. You do not need to sign up for a session.  All sessions are held in Jewett Auditorium on our South Portland Campus.  Please note that sessions begin promptly, and late arrivals will need to reschedule.
