Building Performance Institute (BPI) Bridge Course
The Bridge course is designed to help individuals who in the past have taken Auditor programs other than BPI sponsored courses. This offering is designed to bridge the gap in course content and will be taught by BPI Certified Instructors. At the conclusion of the course, students will be offered the opportunity to challenge the BPI written exam and field exam. Testing fees are not included in the cost of this course. (40 hrs)

BPI Building Analyst I
This course will prepare students to pass the Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst I Written and Field Exams. Students will learn to conduct accurate building analysis, provide information, reports and documentation of findings, make appropriate recommendations for weatherization and energy improvements, including financial benefits and payback on energy investments. Students will be knowledgeable with respect to space and water heating systems and combustion appliance zones. Upon receipt of BPI certification, candidates will be authorized to conduct CAZ tests, flue gas analysis, carbon monoxide tests, spillage tests and gas leak tests. The course includes a significant focus on safety procedures and safety equipment as it applies to the energy field. (80 hrs)

Weatherization TECH 1
The Weatherization Technician I course, will prepare students for entry level jobs in the weatherization industry. Students will learn about understanding energy movement in buildings, buildings as a science, ventilation and indoor air quality, framing types and energy flow, surface and air transported heat loss, R and U values, the building envelope and rules, air sealing and insulating techniques, weatherization materials and installation techniques, blower doors, infrared imaging and building diagnostic tools.

Weatherization for the Homeowner – Level 1
This course will help the homeowner to understand the house as a system, and basic energy concepts. Students will learn about energy movement in the home, how heat is lost, and how weatherizing the home will improve indoor air quality, occupant safety and the longevity of the building. This class will explore some of the common myths of weatherization, and very costly mistakes most people make when attempting to weatherize a home. Whether you are planning to “do it yourself”, or want to better understand about work that you are hiring out, this course is for you! (3 hrs)

Weatherization for the Homeowner – Level 2
This course will expand on the “House as a System” concept, and teach advanced energy sciences. Students will learn how to properly weatherize the house to minimize heat losses. We will practice some of the techniques used by professionals, address some of the challenges, learn to select appropriate materials for the task at hand, and how to avoid mistakes that could create safety hazards in your home. This course will prepare the student to conduct a very effective weatherization project, and make the best use of their weatherization dollars. (3 hrs) Prerequisite: CONS 805- Weatherization for Homeowners 1.

This course consists of instructions on how to set up a bar, purchase equipment, use of different types and sizes of glasses, how to order spirits, keep count of inventory and general costs, plus control of a bar/lounge and the proper way of mixing drinks. Electrical Code Update
This course provides a current update of the 2011 National Electrical Code in preparation for the license renewal exam. (15 hrs)

Oil Burner Technician
This course is offered in cooperation with the Maine Energy Marketers Assoc. (MEMA) and prepares students to take the Oil Burner Technician Licensing Exam. The exam is not part of the course. Books are not included in course fee. For class schedule or to register, call MEMA at 729-5298. (200 hrs)

High Pressure Boiler
This course prepares students to operate high-pressure boilers and to take the High Pressure Boiler Operators Exam. Satisfactory completion of the course earns the student 3 months credit toward the 6-month permit time required by the State of Maine to take the HP Boiler Operators Exam. The exam is not part of the course. (36 hrs) The student must meet 1 of these requirements in order to enroll in this course: 1. Hold a High Pressure Boiler Operator Certificate; OR 2. Hold an Engineer’s License; OR 3. Work in a high pressure boiler room

Propane & Natural Gas: Basic Principles & Practices
This course is designed to qualify students for the State of Maine Propane/Natural Gas License. National propane gas association certification which is necessary for state licensure, requires the successful passage of this course. The exam is included. Basic Principles & Practices Endorsement is a prerequisite for all other NPGA certifications and State of Maine Endorsements. National Propane Association Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) materials are used in the class. (16 hrs.)

Large Equipment Endorsement
This course is designed to qualify students for the State of Maine Propane/Natural Gas Large Equipment License. Propane materials are from the National Propane Association Certified Employee Training Program (CETP). CETP testing is included in course. (32 hrs) Prerequisite: Completion of Propane & Natural Gas I: Basic Principles & Practices (HVAC 806).

Electricity and Controls for HVAC
Introductory course covers HVAC/R electrical and controls in a practical, straightforward manner. Students will learn operation of controls, components, including compressors, contractors, relays, time clocks, HP and LP controls, fundamentals of line voltage, control voltage, NEC articles specific to HVAC/R, electrical safety, service call percentages and test meters. Control circuits are developed using pictorials and schematics. The course is intended for electricians, refrigeration technicians, HVAC technicians, maintenance technicians, and service managers. (36 hrs)

Primary Controls
This course is designed to give participants a basic understanding of primary controls including the features and functions of both Stack Mount and Burner Mount. Participants will learn basic wiring, cad cell operations and safety switch operations including safety check out procedures. This course is NORA approved for 4 CEUs. (4 hrs)

Hydronic Limit Controls
This course is designed to give participants a basic understanding of electrical control circuits and schematics. Limit controls covered will include: • Honeywell 8124, 8148, 7124, 7224 • Carlin EZ Temp 90524 • Hydrolevel Model 3100 / 3150 Participants will learn to identify controls, triple-acting vs. cold start settings, control features and functions, wire controls for heating systems and basic troubleshooting. This course is NORA approved for 4 CEUs. (4 hrs)

Lead Renovation
New designation under the US EPA. General contractors, carpenters, painters and others are trained in RRP rules which go into effect in April, 2010. The participants are trained in the health effects and work practices associated with lead.

Health Professions
Introduction to Phlebotomy
This course prepares individuals for entry-level positions in a health care setting obtaining blood samples from patients. Topics include basic medical terminology, anatomy, laboratory math, blood composition, infection control and hands-on phlebotomy training using needles, syringes, vacutainer tubes and other equipment. Class meets for 30 hours of class time. Students are expected to complete an additional 20 hours of clinical. Time will be scheduled with the instructor to do live sticks (usually scheduled within the 6 weeks of class time). Students must complete 15-20 live sticks to successfully complete the course. (30 hrs) Prerequisite: Students must take the reading section of the Accuplacer Exam prior to registering for this course. A minimum score of 58 is strongly recommended. BLS for Health Care Providers
This American Heart Association course teaches CPR skills for helping victims of all ages (including doing ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen); use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It’s intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital. This course is designed for certified or non-certified, licensed or non-licensed health care professionals. This course meets the requirements for SMCC Allied Health students preparing for clinical rotations. Students must purchase a pocket mask prior to class. (8 hrs)
