Bartending BartendingThis course consists of instructions on how to set up a bar, purchase equipment, use of different types and sizes of glasses, how to order spirits, keep count of inventory and general costs, plus control of a bar/lounge and the proper way of mixing drinks. Students must be 21 years of age to attend. TIPS Certification included in price of course.BRTG-800-01Instructor: Doreen Choate has over 30 years of bartending experience and for 24 of those years she happily served customers at the Village Café, the long time Portland Landmark. She brings to this class a well-rounded perspective of the bartending trade as well as years of practical and professional hands-on bartending and customer service experience. Back >> Oil Burner TechnicianThis 200-hour course is offered in cooperation with the Maine Oil Dealers' Association (MODA) and prepares students to take the Oil Burner Technician Licensing Exam. The exam is not part of the course.HVAC-801-01Instructor: Jay Reny has been a licensed Oil Burner Technician for over 20 years. He is currently employed at Southern Maine Community College as the Manager of Facilities. As part of SMCC's collaboration with Maine Oil Dealers' Association (MODA), Jay is in his 6th year as an instructor for the Oil Burner Technician course. Back >> High Pressure Boiler OperatorThis course prepares student to operate high-pressure boilers and to take the High Pressure Boiler Operators Exam and/or the 3rd or 4th class engineer's exam. Satisfactory completion of the course earns the student 3 months credit toward the 6-month permit time required by the State of Maine to take the HP Boiler Operators Exam. The exam is not part of the course. The student must meet 1 of these requirements in order to enroll in this course: 1) Hold a High Pressure Boiler Operator Certificate; OR 2) Hold an Engineer's License; OR 3) Work in a high-pressure boiler room.HVAC-800-01Instructor: Bill Sawyer worked for over 40 years in the boiler and pressure vessel inspection field. He is semi-retired, working in the boiler inspection area as well as a self employed safety consultant. He has taught the High Pressure Boiler course at SMCC for over 26 years. Back >> Refrigeration and Air ConditioningThis 45-hour course teaches the student basic refrigeration and air conditioning as used in commercial applications. This course includes theory, materials (including alternative refrigerants), tools, systems, and applications. It is taught from a service person's point of view. Necessary requirements for becoming certified in the use of refrigerant recovery equipment will also be covered.HVAC-802-01Instructor: Joe Ferguson is an Instructor at SMCC for Heating, Air-conditioning, Refrigeration, & Plumbing. He holds a Master License Oil & Solid Fuel Board of Maine and is a Certificate Certified Universal C.F.C. as well as a Master Electrician. Back >> Maine Plumbing CodeThis 36-hour course covers a review and interpretation of the Maine Plumbing Code. This information is designed to assist the crafts-person that is interested and eligible to take the state plumbing examination. The exam is not part of the course.PLMB-800-01Instructor: Gregory Marles has taught various trade classes at SMCC since 1996. He holds the following licenses: Plumbing, Oil & Solid Fuel, Propane/Natural Gas, High Pressure Boiler Operator, Electrical and Air Conditioning/Refrigeration. Greg is currently on the State of Maine Propane & Natural Gas Board, and serves on the Energy and Recycling Committee for the city of South Portland. Instructor: Michael Gervais is an electrical/instrument engineer with over 20 years of experience in a variety of industries. Michael is the president of Electrical Controls of Maine and is a State Electrical Board approved instructor. His broad knowledge of the field includes electrical controls and instrumentation systems, power distribution, and plant floor information systems with connections to the enterprise management software. He has developed customized training programs for SMCC in Electrical Safety, Electrical Controls, Pneumatics & Hydraulics, and Electric Code Update. Propane & Natural Gas: Basic Principles & Practices
This 16-hour course is designed to qualify students for the State of Maine Propane/natural gas license. NPGA certification, which is necessary for state licensure, requires the successful passage of this course. The exam is included. Basic Principles & Practices Endorsement is a prerequisite for all other NPGA certifications and State of Maine Endorsements. This 32-hour course is designed to qualify students for the State of Maine Propane/Natural Gas license. Successful completion of this class earns the student National Propane Association Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) certification for appliance Service. The exam is included. Maine State Endorsement for appliance Connection & Service requires CETP certification for both this class and appliance installation. Basic Principles & Practices is a prerequisite.
