September 16, 2009 Two inductees to Southern Maine Community College's Athletics Hall of Fame were honored during a
banquet on Sunday, October 11, 2008, in the HUB Athletics Center
on the South Portland Campus at 2 Fort Rd. John Coyne (Men's Basketball ‘96) was the point guard on the 1995 and 1996 basketball teams that made back-to-back trips to the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Tournament. During those two seasons Coyne was the playmaker who tallied 478 assists per game which ranks him 1st all time at the college. Coyne resides in South Portland. He is a Disability Claims Manager for Prudential Financial. Craig Dagen (Men's Basketball and Baseball ‘91) played both basketball and baseball at the college. During that time Dagen accumulated 1,078 points (5th all time at the college) and 206 assists (4th all time at the college). On the baseball diamond, Dagen left with a career Batting average of .265. He is currently the Women's Basketball Coach and Sports Information Director at Maine Maritime Academy (MMA). At MMA he ranks with a .720 winning percentage and three straight trips to the NCAA tournament. Dagen resides in Castine, Maine "Both Craig and John had a tremendous impact as student athletes during their time at SMCC," said SMCC Director of Athletics Matt Richards. "Induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame is very fitting for them as they exemplify what we hope our current student athletes will strive to become." |
